The role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Terrestrial Ecologist with a background in Desert ecology to join our team in Ballito. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a BSc in Ecology or a related field, and 3-5 years of relevant experience in ecological assessments, field surveys, and monitoring programs. The candidate must be willing to travel to the Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia), and be able to conduct ecological assessments, field surveys, and monitoring programs in accordance with IFC Performance Standard 6 and Critical Habitat Assessment protocols.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute baseline surveys.
  • Prepare ecological baseline reports, impact assessments, and Critical Habitat Assessments
  • Assess impacts to birds resulting from windfarms and overhead transmission lines
  • Develop and implement mitigation measures and monitoring plans
  • Provide technical support for ecological aspects of environmental and social impact assessments
  • Coordinate with project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies
  • Provide training and guidance to junior staff.
Candidate Requirements / Skills
  • BSc Degree in ecology or related disciplines
  • At least three to five years of previous experience in conducting ecological assessments, field surveys, and monitoring programs terrestrial ecology, preferably experience with renewable projects (Solar and Wind)
  • Excellent report writing skills for preparation of technical reports
  • Excellent proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Solid understanding of IFC Performance Standard 6 and Critical Habitat Assessment protocols
  • Ability to interface with clients
  • Attention-to-detail, meticulous organisational skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites (middle east)
  • Abilities to multi-task and meet stringent deadlines
  • Valid driver's license
  • Added benefit: Preparation of ESIA chapters for other disciplines.
