Job Description

Key Purpose Statement
  • The Sports Coach (Biokineticist) will be responsible for delivering structured sports coaching while integrating biokinetics principles to support learner performance, injury prevention, rehabilitation support, movement development, and safe participation in sport.
  • This role blends hands on coaching with physical conditioning, functional movement screening, and learner wellness support, aligned to school policies and child safeguarding requirements.
Key Responsibilities
  1. Coaching & Sports Delivery
  • Assist to coach learners in assigned sport codes in line with the school's sports programme and seasonal calendar.
  • Plan and deliver structured training sessions that are age appropriate, progressive, and performance focused as per the sports code requirements.
  • Develop learners' technical skills, tactical understanding, fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • When required, attend fixtures, tournaments, and sports events (including after hours and weekends where required).
  • Support learner participation across multiple ability levels (developmental to competitive teams).
  1. Strength & Conditioning (School Based)
  • Design and implement safe strength, conditioning, mobility, and agility programmes for learners.
  • Introduce appropriate warm up, cool down, and injury prevention routines for teams.
  • Provide sport specific conditioning programmes for learners and teams.
  • Support return to play progression for learners recovering from injury (in line with medical clearance).
  1. Biokinetics & Injury Prevention Support
  • Conduct basic functional movement screening and identify potential injury risks.
  • Monitor learners' physical load, fatigue, and readiness where relevant.
  • Educate learners on safe movement, posture, flexibility, and injury prevention strategies.
  • Collaborate with parents, medical practitioners, physiotherapists, and the school's support team (where applicable).
  1. Learner Wellbeing & Safeguarding
  • Maintain professional boundaries and uphold child protection and safeguarding standards at all times.
  • Ensure safe supervision of learners during practices, gym sessions, matches, and transport related activities (where applicable).
  • Promote a positive and inclusive sporting environment for all learners.
  1. Administration & Reporting
  • Maintain attendance registers for training/gym sessions and conditioning programmes.
  • Provide feedback to the Head of Sport regarding learner progress, injuries, and team performance.
  • Assist with sports administration where required (team lists, fixture communication, equipment control).
  • Maintain records of rehabilitation support plans and return to play progress (within confidentiality guidelines).
  1. Collaboration & School Culture
  • Work closely with other coaches and staff to support the broader sports strategy of the school.
  • Support school sports events, open days, inter school fixtures, and sport related marketing initiatives.
  • Represent the school professionally at all times.

Working Hours
  • Hours are determined as set by the principal/executive head of the school ad are determined by the needs of the school.
  • Training typically in the afternoons or before school.
  • Fixtures and tournaments may include evenings, weekends, and school holidays.
Reporting to
  • Head of Sport / Sports Director / Principal (as applicable)
Location
  • School Campus (Primary and/or High School)
Qualification(s)
  • BSc in Biokinetics (or equivalent recognised qualification).
  • Registered with the HPCSA as a Biokineticist (current and in good standing).
Experience
  • Proven experience in coaching school aged learners (or similar youth development setting).
  • Strong knowledge of conditioning principles, injury prevention, and safe training practices.
  • Willingness to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends as required by the school sports calendar.
Advantageous
  • Experience in a school environment (Primary or High School).
  • Coaching certification in relevant sport codes (e.g., SA Rugby, SA Hockey, Netball SA, etc.).
  • First Aid Level 1 (or higher).
  • Valid driver's licence and own transport.
  • Experience working with adolescents in performance or rehabilitation contexts.
