JOB SPECIFICATION Position: SHEQ Manager (Independent Contractor)

Contract Type: Independent Contractor (IC)

Contract Rate: ZAR 20,000 - ZAR 30,000 per month (Cost to Company, based on experience)

Start Date: Immediate

The role is based in Linbro Business Park, Sandton, with extensive travel to project sites across Africa.

Overview

Our client is an established electrical EPCM contractor operating primarily across Central and Northern Africa. The company specializes in the engineering and design of medium- to high-voltage substations, overhead lines, power factor correction, harmonic filtration, and emergency generation solutions.

Our client is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented SHEQ Manager to oversee Safety, Health, Environment and Quality compliance across multiple project sites. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong integrity, a proactive work ethic, and the ability to operate effectively in demanding site environments, including mining and high-voltage infrastructure projects.

Experience Requirements
  • Minimum 2-5 years' relevant industry experience
  • Experience within the power/energy sector (high-voltage substations, overhead lines, or generation plants) strongly advantageous
  • Contractor management experience on large infrastructure sites
  • Exposure to high-voltage electrical safety requirements including arc flash, PTW systems, LOTO, live-line safety and working at heights
Minimum Qualifications Education
  • National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, Environmental Management, Risk Management or related field.
Mandatory Certifications
  • SACPCMP Registration as Construction Health and Safety Officer
  • SAMTRAC (or equivalent)
  • First Aid Level 2 or 3
  • Basic Fire Fighting
  • Incident Investigation, Risk Assessment and Legal Liability Training
Additional Requirements
  • Must be able to work in mining and heavy industrial environments
  • Must be willing and able to travel extensively within Africa
  • Valid passport required
  • Valid driver's license preferred
Advantageous
  • Bachelor's Degree (NQF Level 7) in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Risk Management or Engineering (preferred for EPCM projects).
Advantageous Certifications
  • ISO 45001 / 14001 / 9001 Lead Auditor or Internal Auditor
  • ORHVS Awareness / Authorisation Training
Key Responsibilities Health and Safety
  • Develop and maintain project-specific SHEQ plans, risk assessments (HIRA, JSA, HAZID), method statements and safe work procedures
  • Conduct site inspections, audits and toolbox talks
  • Monitor high-risk activities and enforce stop-work authority where necessary
  • Manage SHEQ compliance across remote project sites
  • Lead incident investigations and implement corrective and preventative actions
  • Ensure compliance with OHSA, Construction Regulations 2014, SANS 10142, IEC 61936 and client standards
  • Coordinate emergency response planning and drills
  • Advise engineers, supervisors and contractors on safe design and execution practices
  • Promote a strong safety culture across multicultural teams
Environmental Management
  • Identify and manage environmental aspects and impacts including vegetation clearance, erosion, spills, waste and dust/noise control
  • Ensure compliance with NEMA, environmental authorisations and international standards where applicable
  • Monitor and report on environmental performance metrics
Quality Management
  • Support and maintain the Integrated Management System (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001)
  • Assist with inspections, non-conformance reports and corrective actions
  • Review contractor Quality Plans and ITPs from a SHEQ perspective
  • Reporting and Continuous Improvement
  • Compile monthly SHEQ reports and KPIs
  • Lead SHEQ meetings and lessons-learned sessions
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Promote a Zero Harm culture across all sites
Project and Client Interface
  • Contribute to project planning, scheduling and risk mitigation within the EPCM framework
  • Liaise with clients, utilities and regulatory bodies
  • Identify and mitigate engineering and SHEQ risks during project execution
