A leading engineering organisation operating within the power utilities sector is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer / Senior Technologist (HV) to take full technical ownership of high-voltage substation projects across utility-scale infrastructure.
This is a senior, KPI-driven role intended for professionals with extensive experience in HV substation design, engineering delivery, and utility compliance. The successful candidate will lead substation planning and design activities while providing technical oversight across multiple projects.
Key Responsibilities & Performance IndicatorsThe role will be measured against the following role-critical KPIs:
- End-to-end planning and design of HV substations (132kV - 765kV)
- Delivery of accurate, compliant substation layouts, drawings, and full design packages
- Selection, specification, and technical evaluation of primary plant equipment
- Preparation of electrical calculations, studies, and supporting technical documentation
- Compliance with local, international, and client engineering standards
- On-time delivery of multiple concurrent substation projects
- Technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance of junior engineers and designers
- Review of contractor designs and resolution of technical queries
- Engineering support during construction, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and final handover
Candidates must meet one of the following qualification criteria:
- BSc Eng / BEng (Electrical) with a minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience
OR - BTech (Electrical) with a minimum of 10 years post-qualification engineering experience
- Additional mandatory requirements:
- Professional registration with ECSA (Engineer or Engineering Technologist)
- 7-10 years experience in HV transmission and distribution projects
- Proven experience in power utility substation projects
- Eskom transmission and/or distribution experience is essential
- Strong working knowledge of Bentley MicroStation
- Own reliable transport
