About Our Organisation

Joombarn-buru Aboriginal Corporation is the nominated PBC for the Joombarn-buru determination area. Joombarn buru determination is in the Kimberley which covers land about 70 kilometres north-east of Broome and 55 kilometres west of Derby, within the Shire of Broome. The area includes Mount Jowlaenga, a culturally significant site, and 'Joombarn-buru' means wetland, which describes much of the 940 square kilometre area. The Country was traditionally a meeting place for the different groups who all used the land and is entirely bounded by other Native Title determination areas.

The determination identified the language labels of Nimanburr, Warrwa, Nyikina, Nyul Nyul, Jabirr Jabirr, Ngumbarl and Yawuru. There are 17 listed apicals which have been distilled to 14 with living descendants. The group identifies through their family groups, rather than their language groups.

JBAC delivers culturally governed programs that support caring for Country, employment pathways, and strong governance outcomes for Joombarn-buru people.

JBAC welcomes applications from experienced Traditional Owners and community leaders who bring strong skills, cultural knowledge, and a commitment to safeguarding Country. Ongoing professional development and targeted training will be provided to support you in excelling in this senior role.

The National Indigenous Times acknowledges and pays respect to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation. We recognise Aboriginal Community's continuing connection to their lands, waters and stories and acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded.
