Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science Senior Lecturer/Lecturer: Actuarial Science (Stellenbosch Campus)

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science offers both undergraduate and postgraduate education in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, Actuarial Science, Financial Risk Management and Data Science. Members of the Department are actively engaged in research and consulting in these fields. The Department has excellent computing facilities in support of these activities.

A full-time position at Senior Lecturer or Lecturer level in the Actuarial Science section is available in the Department.

Duties
  • Teaching and developing (predominantly undergraduate) courses in Actuarial Science.
  • Initiating and supervising research activities.
  • Assisting in the general administration of the Actuarial Science programme.
  • Developing relationships with, and serving on committees of, the Actuarial Society of South Africa.
  • Assisting with the Department's liaising with the financial industry, and enhancing and expanding industry ties and collaboration.
Requirements

The incumbent will need to meet all of the following requirements:

  • An Associate Member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (AMASSA) nearing the Fellowship qualification, or has completed the examinations required for Fellowship but has still to fully complete the work-based learning component of the Fellowship.
  • A degree in Actuarial Science or a related field.
  • Strong technical skills.
  • Good communication skills for lecturing students (in English) at various levels.
  • An interest in carrying out research in the actuarial field.
  • An actuary qualified as a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA), although a FIA/FFA/FIAA prepared to become a FASSA may also be considered.
  • A degree in Actuarial Science or a related field.
  • Strong technical skills.
  • Good communication skills for lecturing students (in English) at various levels.
  • An interest in carrying out research in the actuarial field.
  • Experience in the practice of Actuarial Science.
Recommendations

Meeting any of the following criteria would be advantageous:

  • A proven track record of teaching in Actuarial Science.
  • A proven track record of research in Actuarial Science.
  • Experience in the practice of Actuarial Science.
  • Experience in data analytics or the application of artificial intelligence.
