Job Description

Key Responsibilities (Core)
  • Solution Delivery & Development
  • Analyse functional specifications and translate them into robust technical solutions.

  • Develop and enhance SAP ABAP solutions including:

    • Reports (ALV), enhancements, workflows, interfaces, conversions, forms, and data extracts.

    • ABAP Objects (OO), modularisation, reusable components, and clean coding practices.

  • Build and support integrations using technologies such as IDoc, BAPI, RFC, file-based interfaces, and APIs (e.g., OData where applicable).

  • Develop and support SAP forms (SmartForms / Adobe Forms / SAPscript depending on environment).

  • Perform technical impact assessments for changes and upgrades.

Support & Incident Resolution
  • Provide 2nd/3rd line technical support, including debugging, root cause analysis, and defect resolution.

  • Resolve performance issues and optimise ABAP code (especially for S/4HANA/HANA environments where relevant).

  • Support month-end/year-end or operational business cycles as required.

Quality, Testing & Documentation
  • Produce technical designs, code documentation, and test evidence aligned to SDLC and audit needs.

  • Conduct unit testing, support SIT/UAT, and assist with deployment readiness.

  • Participate in peer reviews and enforce development standards (naming conventions, transport discipline, error handling, security).

Change & Release Management
  • Manage transports across environments (DEV/QA/PRD) and comply with change control processes (e.g., ITIL/ChaRM where applicable).

  • Contribute to release planning, cutover support, and hypercare.

Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Engage with functional consultants, business analysts, and key business users to clarify requirements and propose options.

  • Provide technical guidance to reduce custom complexity and improve maintainability.

Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to modernise or simplify (e.g., refactoring, performance tuning, improved logging/monitoring).

  • Keep current with relevant SAP technical roadmaps and best practices (e.g., ABAP on HANA, CDS concepts, modern ABAP patterns where applicable).

Key Deliverables / Outputs
  • High-quality ABAP developments delivered on time and aligned to functional requirements.

  • Stable production support with measurable reductions in repeat incidents/defects.

  • Complete technical documentation, unit tests, and deployment-ready transports.

  • Improved system performance and maintainability through optimisation and standardisation.

Minimum Requirements Qualifications
  • Relevant IT qualification (Diploma/Degree) or equivalent practical experience.

Experience (Typical)
  • K3: 3-6 years SAP ABAP development/support experience.

  • K4: 6-10+ years SAP ABAP experience, including complex integrations and solution ownership.

Technical Skills (Required)
  • Strong ABAP fundamentals (debugging, performance tuning, modularisation, error handling).

  • Enhancements: user exits, BADIs, enhancement points, implicit/explicit enhancements.

  • Interface development: IDoc/BAPI/RFC and file-based integration patterns.

  • Forms development (SmartForms/Adobe Forms/SAPscript as applicable).

  • Data handling: internal tables, Open SQL, joins, buffering, and performance considerations.

Technical Skills (Advantageous)
  • ABAP Objects, modern ABAP syntax.

  • Exposure to S/4HANA technical concepts and performance considerations.

  • OData services / API integration exposure.

  • SAP authorisations awareness (secure coding, data protection, SoD considerations).

  • Agile delivery experience (Scrum/Kanban), CI/CD exposure, or automation practices.

Behavioural Competencies
  • Analytical problem-solving and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills (able to explain technical topics to non-technical stakeholders).

  • Delivery focus with good planning, estimation, and prioritisation skills.

  • Collaboration across cross-functional teams.

  • Ownership mindset and continuous improvement orientation.

  • Coaching/leadership capability (especially for K4).

Working Conditions / Other Requirements
  • May require after-hours support during releases or critical incidents.

  • Hybrid/on-site expectations as per business requirements.
