Job Description

Job Description: R&D Project Engineer (Production Technology)

Department: Research & Development (R&D)

Unit: Production Technology (PT)

Location: Cape Town Service Hub (Upper Camp)

Reporting Line: Reports to the Lead R&D Project Engineer (PT Unit Lead)

About the Role

At Citra, we are redefining construction by transitioning from traditional manual methods to precision-based manufacturing. To achieve our goal of delivering homes as high-quality products, we are developing automated, repeatable production processes that ensure speed and consistency.

We are seeking an R&D Project Engineer (Production Technology) to bridge the gap between digital design and physical production. You will be responsible for designing, testing, and implementing the automation systems and machinery that power our production facilities. Your work will directly impact our ability to scale globally by ensuring our production lines are efficient, robust, and capable of "Level Production."

Key Responsibilities Automation & Robotics
  • Production System Development: Design and prototype automated workflows for the assembly of Citra housing units, focusing on efficiency and repeatability.
  • Robotics Integration: Research and implement robotic solutions for repetitive tasks (e.g., material handling, automated fastening, spraying/coating) to increase speed and safety.
  • Machinery Optimization: Oversee the specification, commissioning, and modification of production equipment (CnC machines, assembly tables) to suit Citra's unique material requirements.
Process Engineering
  • Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DfMA): Collaborate with the Building Technology and Design teams to ensure all building components are engineered for efficient, automated production.
  • Production Flow: Optimize the factory layout and process flow to minimize waste, reduce cycle times, and achieve consistent "Takt time" in production.
  • Tooling Design: Develop custom jigs, fixtures, and end-of-arm tooling to adapt standard machinery for Citra's proprietary components.
Implementation & Testing
  • Pilot Testing: Lead hands on trials of new production technologies in the R&D workshop before rolling them out to operational environments.
  • Tech Transfer: Create detailed technical documentation and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to transfer new technologies to the Operations and Factory teams.
  • Data Integration: Work with the IT/Data team to ensure production machinery integrates with Citra's digital backbone (BIM to Field data flow).
Qualifications Required
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Experience: 2-4 years of experience in a manufacturing, automation, or process engineering environment.
  • Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of CAD/CAM workflows (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and mechanical design principles.
  • Automation: Practical experience with PLC programming, sensor integration, or robotics control systems.
Preferred
  • Construction Tech: Experience in off site manufacturing (OSM) or modular construction.
  • Software: Proficiency in Python, C++, or similar languages for hardware interfacing.
  • Hands on: Willingness to get "hands dirty" prototyping mechanical solutions and troubleshooting machinery on the workshop floor.
Core Competencies
  • Systems Thinking: Ability to visualize the entire production ecosystem, ensuring individual machines work harmoniously within the larger manufacturing line.
  • Problem Solving: Rapidly identifying bottlenecks in physical processes and engineering mechanical or software solutions to resolve them.
  • Interdisciplinary Communication: Translating complex mechanical constraints into clear requirements for software developers and structural engineers.
Why Join Citra?

You will be at the forefront of the "Industrial Revolution 4.0" for the construction industry. This is a rare opportunity to apply high end manufacturing logic to the built environment, helping Citra deliver on its promise of high quality, affordable housing through the power of technology.
