Position Purpose

To implement RME safety, health and environment management system so that all railway construction and related activities are in compliance with the requirements of health, safety and environmental legislation and TRIM policies, standards and procedures.

Position Outputs
  • Provide advice and support to line management to ensure compliance is achieved regarding health and safety legislation and TRIM and Transnet requirements.
  • Advise and support line management in the implementation of internal and external assessments and induction training.
  • Partake in meetings health and safety meetings, project progress meetings, contractor and supplier briefing meetings) to promote health, safety and environment and provide assistance to line to resolve conflicts in relation to health and safety issues and ensure compliance with applicable legislation or standards.
  • Facilitate risk assessments and ensure identified control measures are implemented to eliminate hazards, incidents or injuries.
  • Participate in the evaluation and approval of suppliers or contractors tender documentation and equipment.
  • Monitor and measure health and safety performance on regular basis and advise on adequate corrective and preventive actions to correct negative trends and reinforce positive performance.
  • Participate in incident investigations and assist line management in the identification basic or root causes, corrective and preventive actions and ensure ongoing follow ups to close out recommendations.
  • Advice and support line in preparing and implementing emergency preparedness and response plan including rescue plans to minimize operations disruptions.
  • Compile and communicate health and safety statistics and highlight systems strengths and weaknesses for improvements.
  • Monitor and measure the implementation of behaviour changing methods such as Daily Safe Task Instruction, Safe and Unsafe Practice Slips, Planned Task Observations, Critical Task Analysis and Alcohol testing and specific training interventions.
  • Conduct audits and inspections and communicate the findings to line management for remedial actions to be taken and arrange for follow ups to ensure adequate implementation of the recommended actions.
  • Ensure to develop health and safety skills to ensure proper implementation of the health and safety management system.
  • Facilitate communication between RME and authorities, professional bodies and other stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree/ B-tech/ National Diploma in health and safety OR Environmental Health is required.
  • At least 3 years' experience in a health and safety function with responsibilities in a Multi-disciplinary Project environment.
  • Driver's license code 8.
  • Willing to work extended hours under extreme pressure regularly.
  • Must be eligible for SACPCMP registration within 12 months of appointment.
