The Secondary Education Teacher is the primary instructional delivery person in the classroom at Gilson Middle School and Valdez High School. Student achievement and growth are primarily dependent on the work and efforts of the classroom teacher. The position is demanding, varied, and complex. The teacher must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be well trained in content, knowledge, and project-based teaching strategies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at times designated.
- Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
- Creates, monitors, and maintains a positive classroom environment that supports the school wide behavior expectation in which most students are engaged, incorporates mutual respect, and provides cooperative learning opportunities.
- Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
- Strives to implement by instruction and action the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of District specialists as required, and provides for appropriate accommodations for Special Education and 504 students.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
- Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
- Develop lessons in art based on the curriculum in the school.
- Connect with the large population of artists in our community.
- Note student's progress with multiple assessment practices.
- Conduct a yearly art show with students as partners in the process.
- Order and maintain materials to support the art program.
- Collaborate with homeroom teachers to build cross curricular lessons that build on the core instruction of literacy and math.
- Maintain positive relationships with the other colleagues sharing the art space.

Supervises students assigned to classes. Provides general supervision before school, during passing periods, and after school.
REPORTS TOPrincipal of Gilson Middle School.
WORK ENVIRONMENTMostly works indoors in a classroom setting. Supervising outdoor recess and bus duty may be required during the course of the work day.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, lift, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The use of hands to handle or feel is required and must sometimes climb or balance.
POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORKThis is a full-time position with benefits. This position operates for 185 days out of the year. Start and end dates are determined by the Valdez City School District. Salary and benefits are determined via the negotiated agreement between the Valdez City School District and the Valdez American Federation of Teachers.
TRAVELSome travel may be expected for this position.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE- Valid State of Alaska Teacher's Certificate with multiple endorsements.
- Prior teaching experience.
- Master's degree in Secondary Education.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology in the classroom.
- Understanding of how to differentiate instruction.
- Experience with blended learning.
- Experience with utilizing NWEA MAPS data.
The successful candidate will be required to present a valid criminal background check upon hire.
