Job Description

IVANPLATS (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, is advancing the development of its world-class palladium-rhodium-nickel-copper-gold project in the Limpopo Province near Mokopane. This unique mineral deposit will be exploited using large mechanised state-of-the-art underground mining methods, deploying the latest technology to develop this "mine of the future".

Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:
  • MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Medicine / Occupational Health (Diploma or Master's Degree).
Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:
  • At least 3-5 years' experience in occupational health within mining or heavy industry.
  • At least 5-8 years' experience working as a registered Occupational Medical Practitioner in mining or heavy industry.
  • Proven experience managing medical surveillance programmes and occupational health risks.
  • Experience with incapacity, disability, and return-to-work cases.
  • Knowledge of Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), relevant Codes of Practice, and occupational health legislation.
  • Strong clinical assessment, reporting, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary health, safety, and operations teams.
  • Strong clinical judgement and ethical practice.
  • Excellent reporting and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary HSE team.
  • High level of integrity and confidentiality.
The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to: Medical Surveillance & Assessment:
  • Conduct pre-employment, periodic, exit, medical examinations.
  • Perform fitness-to-work and risk-based medical assessments.
  • Detect and manage occupational diseases or health impairments early.
  • Provide early intervention and referral where necessary.
  • Oversee Heat Tolerance Screening (HTS) and specialised medical programmes.
  • Provide recommendations to reduce workplace health risks.
Implement and monitor programs such as:
  • Heat stress management.
  • Medical surveillance programmes.
  • Occupational hygiene integration.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and confidential health data.
Health Monitoring & Management:
  • Identify and monitor health trends across the workforce.
  • Manage ill health and occupational disease cases, including referral, treatment planning, and follow up.
  • Participate in biological and medical risk assessments and surveillance programmes.
Workplace Health Promotion:
  • Provide health promotion, education, and counselling related to occupational hazards.
  • Participate in Workplace Health and Safety risk assessments and committees.
Advisory & Strategic Support:
  • Advise mine management on occupational health risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Advise on incapacity, disability management, and return to work recommendations.
  • Support disability management, incapacity processes, and return to work programmes.
  • Participate in Health & Safety Committee meetings.
Clinical services and Health Promotion:
  • Manage chronic conditions affecting fitness to work.
  • Provide emergency medical care and stabilisation when required.
  • Provide employee wellness education and awareness programmes.
  • Support HIV, TB, and chronic disease management initiatives.
Ensure compliance with:
  • Mine Health and Safety Act.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Implement company medical standards and codes of practice.
  • Participate in audits and inspections.
Manage staffing availability for the clinic (leave plans, filling vacancies etc.)
  • Lead and manage daily operations of the Occupational Health Centre.
  • Supervise and support medical staff (nurses, technicians, HTS assistants).
  • Ensure adequate staffing, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Manage patient flow, service delivery efficiency, and waiting times.
  • Ensure availability and maintenance of medical equipment and facilities.
  • Oversee infection prevention and control standards.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives within the OHC.
  • Develop and manage the OHC budget.
  • Monitor expenditure and cost control (medical consumables, services, equipment).
  • Approve procurement and motivate for sole source suppliers where required.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources without compromising quality of care.
