Job PurposeNew Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) Context
- This post is in line with the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP), which is part of the Staffing South Africa's Universities Framework (SSAUF) - it is a national and sector response towards addressing challenges in the South African Higher Education system in respect of size, composition and capacity of its academic staff.
- The SSAUF intends to identify and nurture academic talent early in the academic development trajectory, and to support newly recruited academics to develop teaching expertise; develop research skills, including scientific publication skills.
- The new generation of academics programme (nGAP), comprising one element of the SSAUF, involves the recruitment of highly capable scholars as new academics.
- Appointment within the nGAP programme will be made such that staff equity targets are met, with preference to black and/or women South African citizens.
- To be eligible for selection for an nGap post, applicants must meet the following criteria, in addition to meeting the minimum criteria specified for the post:
- show interest in becoming an academic
- be 40 years or younger
- candidates must have a 70% pass mark for his/her Master's degree
- show evidence of eligibility to undertake post-graduate study at doctoral level or post-doctoral programme
- be willing to commit to placement at the appointing university for the full 6 years of the programme
The purpose of this post is to support the department to fulfil its academic objectives which include teaching according to a set syllabus; undertake research and innovation; contribute to curriculum development and design; engage in community engagement. The successful candidate will teach in the Nursing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience- Master's degree in nursing sciences or equivalent qualification, awarded with a pass mark of 70% or greater.
- A qualification in nursing education
- Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse and midwife
- Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council as a nurse educator.
- A qualification in a nursing clinical specialization is advantageous.
- The candidate must be registered or prepared to register for a Doctoral degree.
- At least one (1) year lecturing experience and/or 4 years clinical teaching experience in the nursing discipline after registration at SANC. (Preference will be given to applicants with lecturing experience)
- Participation in all components of the nGAP development programme during the first six (6) years of employment.
- Teach in the nursing programmes as offered in the department.
- Partaking in skill laboratory activities and assessments in line with SANC requirements, following the nursing standards, coordination of laboratory and clinical placement rosters of staff and students.
- Curriculum development and theoretical and clinical teaching and assessments in the programme through e.g. monitoring and reporting.
- Implement and monitor academic, and clinical records and progress of students according to SANC regulations.
- Academic administration from admissions to graduation.
- Adhere to quality assurance principles in the undergraduate, postgraduate programmes and short courses offered in the Department.
- Academic and clinical development of student learner nurses within a work-integrated learning and mobile learning situation.
- Assist in the Department with educational activities where a need is identified by the HoD, to enhance quality in the delivery of programmes.
- Participate in community development projects and portfolios in the department.
- Engage in professional development sessions and research projects.
- Good Administrative and Organizational skills (record keeping, etc.)
- Appropriate level of academic and clinical knowledge in Nursing Science to apply a PHC approach in offering the nursing curricula.
- Ensure the classroom and clinical education settings, used for teaching are well equipped.
- Ability to work independently and in a team as a role-model.
- Demonstrate planning, organising, leadership and control skills to assist in tasks related to the admission of students to completion of their studies.
- Computer literacy and implementation thereof in education settings, along with portfolio implementation under or as a program coordinator and within the Department
- Strong learner centered approach and with strong work ethic.
- Good interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in MS Office 365
