Job Description

ALS is seeking a motivated and detail orientated Laboratory Technician (Chemistry) to join our laboratory team in Durban.

About the Position

The Laboratory Technician (Chemistry) will ensure accurate analysis results using available resources within a stipulated turnaround time.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine analytical tasks and troubleshooting on laboratory instrumentation and apparatus.
  • Perform general and routine analyses by instrumental or "wet" methods according to standard procedures.
  • Prepare calibration, QC solutions and other laboratory reagents as per procedure.
  • Ensure that all reagents used are appropriately prepared, tested and verified before use.
  • Carry out calibration/verification checks on apparatus before use.
  • Ensure that analyses are conducted according to documented procedures and quality control measures are applied.
  • Understand and evaluate sample QC related issues on laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Maintain all QA/QC documents for laboratory instrument monitoring.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of critical laboratory spares and consumables to reduce instrument downtime.
  • Assist with any laboratory/quality related tasks as assigned by the Site or Quality Manager.
  • Report all instrument failures and faults on time to the Lab Supervisor to minimize breakdown time.
  • Ensure work is done in accordance with all appropriate health, safety and environmental procedures and policies.
  • Calculate results of analyses and report them to the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Ensure proper accommodation and environment in the testing area as per ISO 17025 standards.
  • Investigate and assist with corrective action reports, ensuring they are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance and intermediate checks for all instruments are performed.
  • Ensure optimum use of available resources.
  • Maintain proper records at all stages of testing to ensure validity of results.
  • Ensure safe and proper handling of samples/materials throughout the laboratory.
Requirements
  • Mature chemistry/science diploma or degree, preferably a National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in an analytical laboratory or similar environment.
  • Fluent in English (written and oral).
  • Ability to investigate, resolve, and respond to queries.
  • Ability to multitask and meet challenging deadlines/priorities.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Attention to detail.
