Laboratory Technician - Instrumentation
Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
Reporting to: Instrumentation Team Leader

ALS is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician - Instrumentation to join our laboratory team in Johannesburg. This role operates in a 24/7 environment and requires flexibility to work shifts and extended hours when needed. The successful candidate will support laboratory operations by ensuring accurate sample analysis, maintaining instrumentation, and delivering high-quality data within set production targets.

Laboratory Operations & Compliance
  • Adhere to ALS Health & Safety standards, company values, policies, and SOPs
  • Maintain proper housekeeping and safe handling of samples, consumables, and equipment
  • Ensure accurate sample tracking and data integrity at all times
Instrumentation & Analysis
  • Operate and perform routine and non routine analysis using ICP, AAS, ICP MS, XRF, and Leco instruments
  • Conduct first line maintenance, troubleshooting, and preventative care on instruments and auto samplers
  • Prepare calibration standards, sample dilutions, and QC solutions
  • Monitor and resolve QC related issues to ensure reliable data output
Production & Data Management
  • Meet daily production targets per shift
  • Accurately batch and manage runs using GEMS
  • Perform technician level data approval (Tech Approval)
  • Maintain proper tracking and traceability of all samples and runs
Team Support
  • Assist other laboratory departments when required
  • Contribute to a collaborative, team oriented work environment

  • Solid understanding of analytical instrumentation and laboratory processes

  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Understanding of wet chemistry and geochemical digestion methods
  • Ability to identify and report HSE risks
Qualifications & Requirements
  • National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (or equivalent)
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Experience with AA or ICP instrumentation will be advantageous
