Introduction

ArcelorMittal South Africa is looking to recruit 1 x Junior Manager

  • Maximize production throughput across plants with minimal delays.
  • Optimize rail transport schedules to ensure timely delivery of materials.
  • Reduce operational downtime caused by equipment failures or process bottlenecks.
  • Develop junior managers through training, mentoring, and performance evaluations to enhance team capability.
  • Achieve zero or minimal safety incidents involving locomotives, rail transport, or plant operations.
  • Ensure compliance with rail safety standards and industry-specific regulations.
  • Control operational costs, including labor, fuel, and maintenance for locomotives and rail systems.
  • Monitor and improve asset utilization to support production demands.
  • Identify and resolve inefficiencies in rail transport, material handling, or production processes.
  • Maintain effective communication with cross-functional teams (e.g., maintenance, procurement, engineering).
  • Manage relationships with external stakeholders, such as rail operators or suppliers, as needed.
  • Address staffing challenges, such as absenteeism or scheduling conflicts, to avoid disruptions.
  • Ensure smooth shift transitions and handoffs to maintain 24/7 operational continuity
Qualification:
  • National Diploma (NQF 6/10) in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
  • Structured Junior Management Development Program will be advantageous
Experience and Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience in operational leadership/management.
  • At least 3-5 years in a leadership role overseeing teams, ideally managing shift-based supervisors.
  • Familiarity with rail scheduling, locomotive operations, and coordination of material delivery to multiple plant locations.
  • Experience managing performance, resolving conflicts, and fostering collaboration among shift-based teams.
  • Extensive experience ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA or equivalent) in industrial environments.
  • Experience managing operational budgets, controlling costs, and allocating resources effectively.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including maintenance, engineering, procurement, and external rail operators.
  • SAP and computer literacy
  • Sound knowledge of labour relation
  • Knowledge of rail transport management systems or logistics scheduling tools.
  • Knowledge of rail safety regulations and standards
  • Deep understanding of steel manufacturing processes, including raw material handling, production, and distribution.
  • Familiarity with key performance indicators (KPIs) like throughput, on-time delivery, and equipment uptime.
  • Willingness to conduct site visits and inspections as needed.
  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance technologies for locomotives and rail systems
