Internship: Bioprocessing

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a leading scientific and technology research organisation that researches, develops, localises and diffuses technologies to accelerate socio economic prosperity in South Africa. The organisation's work contributes to industrial development and supports a capable state. The CSIR has a vacancy for an Internship: Bioprocessing, based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operation, monitoring and sampling of bioreactors (10L to 1000L).
  • Analyse and interpret experimental results.
  • Prepare technical reports.
  • Contribute to the planning of experiments and execute planned experiments.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of standard operating procedures.
  • Contribute and assist with laboratory inventory management.
  • Take responsibility and custodianship of the laboratory.
  • Prepare chemical and biological agents.
  • Conduct routine general microbiology including enumeration of cells and streak/spread plating.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
  • Honours in biotechnology or microbiology.
  • Strong understanding of microbial processes.
  • Computer literate with MS Office Package.
  • Hands on approach with respect to equipment operation, and working in the laboratory and pilot facility.
  • Ability and willingness to work shifts (morning, afternoon or night).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; analytical, methodical, innovative; results driven, self motivated and team player; pro active and focused; willingness to learn and work under pressure; ability to prioritise and sense of urgency and accuracy.
