The client is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Retail Financial Accountant to join their Finance team. This role is responsible for managing month-end financial processes, balance sheet reconciliations, payment reviews, and financial reporting across multiple retail operations. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring financial accuracy, maintaining strong financial controls, and supporting operational decision making while contributing to continuous process improvement within the finance function.

Key Responsibilities Month End & Financial Accounting

Prepare and post all month end journals across the client's retail operations, including but not limited to:

  • Sales and cost of sales
  • Petty cash
  • Stock opening and closing balances
  • Gross profit percentage reviews and variance analysis
  • Rental and utilities
  • Bank charges and accruals
  • Prepayments
  • Workmen's compensation accruals
  • Pre operating cost reallocations
  • Salaries (head office, distribution centre, retail, and casual staff)
  • Management fees

Perform accruals and reversals for rentals, utilities, and bank charges as required.

Payments & Banking
  • Check and review all daily, monthly, and rental payments.
  • Load confidential payments and assist with rental payment processing when required.
  • Assist with resolving banking queries and cash related discrepancies.
  • Process cash flow payments and foreign exchange payments.
  • Manage credit card queries with the bank, including new card requests, failed transactions, and amendments.
Reconciliations & Controls
  • Review creditor reconciliations.
  • Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Oversee the processing and balancing of suspense and control accounts.
  • Ensure compliance with internal financial controls and procedures.
Reporting & Analysis

Prepare and update monthly financial reports and management breakdowns, including:

  • Distribution centre cost splits and management fees
  • Year to date and rolling 12 month store performance reviews
  • Store targets and performance analysis
  • Head office cost allocations
  • Payment and supplier analysisStore comparisons
  • Computer, packaging, and transport cost analysis
  • Transport cost per unit testing and validation
People & Process Management
  • Manage and support direct reports within the finance team.
  • Review clock in and attendance reports.
  • Assist with streamlining finance processes to improve efficiency and productivity.
  • Participate in and complete ad hoc projects and financial analysis as required.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
  • BCom Accounting Degree (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar retail financial accounting role.
