Position: Environmental Management Systems Coordinator / Department: CWD HR - 008300 / Reports to: Manager, Quality & Environmental / Direct Reports: none
Purpose of RoleResponsible for supporting continuous improvement initiatives that reflect MacLean's Engineering Environmental objectives, mission, vision, and values, implementing and administering standardized Environmental processes to ensure compliance to Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulations as well as other requirements, and upholding conformity to ISO 14001:2015.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Support Managers and Supervisors in the development, implementation and monitoring of environmental management system (EMS) objectives, key performance indicators (KPIs), and continual improvement initiatives/activities.
- Monitor and maintain complete records of legal compliance requirements and assist Managers and Supervisors with planning to and achieving environmental compliance.
- Respond to and investigate environmental incidents and concerns. Assess urgency and severity of issues and provide input to implement immediate, and/or long term, measurable and sustainable corrective action plans. Complete detailed root cause analysis to identify areas where corrective actions and opportunities for improvement can be implemented.
- Ensure environmental controls are established and maintained for all key equipment and processes.
- Work in conjunction with Quality to schedule and facilitate joint management reviews, at least annually, to monitor above areas.
- Determine, with Management, the risks and opportunities of environmental aspects by maintaining a list that includes risk priority number to be reviewed upon implementing controls or other changes.
- Conduct and monitor risk assessments with relevant team members at each facility for environmental risk and compliance.
- Coordinate outside resources as required for compliance monitoring requirements at all facilities.
- Analyze metrics from relevant processes to implement EMS initiatives across all levels of the company.
- Support the environmental internal audit process, providing focus, direction, and leadership.
- Support registration at due dates and provide annual updates for Facility EASR registry.
- Maintain process flowchart mapping needs to track the continual improvement of the EMS; maintain an overall process integration flow.
- Provide guidance on the development, auditing, editing, and approvals of high-level process workflows, standard operating procedures, environmental standards, work instructions, and other supporting documentation in relation to environmental aspects and the EMS.
- Conduct gap analysis of processes and subsequent controls, providing training to process owners to help teams achieve legal compliance and conformity to 14001 and our EMS.
- Support, and at times deliver, training to employees to improve EMS awareness and competence.
- Responsible for internal and external communication relating to the EMS.
- Facilitate preparation for external audits.
- Travel between Ontario sites as required.
- Provide regular reporting of activities, compliance issues and relevant updates to Supervisor or Department Manager.
- Any other duties assigned by the Supervisor or designate.
- Environmental Management, Safety, Business, Engineering, Quality or Science related diploma, certificate, or equivalent.
- 1-2 years of experience working in an EMS role including experience with ISO 14001 implementation.
- General understanding of Federal, State, Provincial and Local regulations and requirements.
- Demonstrated understanding of fundamental environmental principles, systems, methods, organizational dynamics, supplier relations, training, root-cause analysis, risk assessment and improvement systems.
- Detail-oriented and highly organized.
- Team-oriented, positive attitude, high aptitude, humble and willingness to learn.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite; SharePoint, Visio are assets.
- Self-motivated; able to schedule priorities as assigned and working with minimal direct supervision.
- Well-developed analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Creative and innovative with focus on problem solving.
- Previous experience within a manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of ISO9001 Quality Management System as an asset.
