Overview

The Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary will be responsible for direct and/or indirect nursing care of a patient or group of patients and will function under the direct and/ or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse.

This includes caring for the patient, his possessions, documentation and the control and economical use of stock and equipment in theatre.

This role will serve under supervision of the Registered Nurse in theatre. The team member will perform nursing duties in accordance with the South African Nursing Council (SANC), Department of Health (DOH) and National Core standards.

Responsibilities
  • Support the patient on their arrival into the ward pre-and post-operatively.
  • Monitor a patient's physiological and physical parameters.
  • Provide appropriate treatment until the patient has recovered from the effects of the anaesthesia and/or surgery.
  • Assess the patient in order to ensure they have recovered and can be discharged.
  • Contributes to the holistic care of patients.
  • Effective Risk prevention and management.
  • Effective communication with patients regarding their care
  • Practice the principles of infection prevention and all Standard precautions.
  • Promote and maintain good public relations with patients, relatives and visitors.
  • Provide the delivery of evidence-based nursing care.
  • Compliance with documentation policy.
  • Ongoing audit of health records to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure all stock is well controlled and managed, charged and credited appropriately.
  • Maintain a therapeutic, clean and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act.
  • Report potential/actual risks identified.
  • Always maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assumes responsibility for own personal and professional development.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining competence in CPR/BLS.
  • Project a positive professional image.
  • Promote and maintain good working and interpersonal relationships with management, colleagues and doctors.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.
  • Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary qualification.
  • Current registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • BLS qualification is advantageous.
  • Minimum of 5 years as an enrolled nurse assistant.
  • Post-Op nursing experience is essential.
  • Floor nurse and Anaesthetic experience is essential.
  • Experience within private hospital environment is advantageous.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of sterilisation, disinfection, and aseptic and sterile technique
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and patient safety.
  • Knowledge of Infection Control & Prevention
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the surgical procedure by anticipating the needs of the multi-disciplinary team members.
