Job Description

PURPOSE OF ROLE

To produce high-quality solar PV engineering designs and technical outputs that meet all client, regulatory, and industry standards. The role requires strong technical expertise in PV system design, grid integration, and project execution within the South African regulatory framework. The position includes leadership responsibilities and mentorship of junior engineers. qualities.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
  • Design and development of utility-scale and commercial solar PV systems (conceptual to detailed design)
  • PV system sizing, yield analysis, and optimisation using tools such as PVSyst
  • Preparation of Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), layout drawings, and plant design documentation
  • Design of DC systems, inverter configurations, and AC reticulation systems
  • Grid connection studies and compliance with the South African Grid Code
  • Integration of PV systems with MV and LV networks
  • Design of LV & MV Motor Control Centres
  • Design of LV & MV industrial plant reticulation systems
  • Design and specification of inverters, transformers, switchgear, and protection systems
  • Earthing and lightning protection design specific to PV plants
  • Development of technical specifications and Employer's Requirements
  • Compilation of Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and cost estimates
  • Participation in tender preparation, adjudication, and contract documentation
  • Review and approval of EPC contractor designs and drawings
  • Support during construction, including site inspections and technical queries
  • Assistance with commissioning, performance testing, and grid compliance verification
  • Interface management with civil, mechanical, and grid stakeholders
  • Ensuring compliance with SANS, NRS, IEC standards, and local regulations
  • Mentoring and development of junior engineers and technicians
QUALIFICATION
  • BSc (Eng) , B Eng. or B.Tech Eng degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Registered with ECSA as a Professional Engineer/Engineering Technologist.
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in solar PV design and engineering
  • Proven experience in utility-scale or C&I PV projects in South Africa
  • Strong experience with PV design software (e.g., PVSyst, Helioscope)
  • Knowledge of Eskom and municipal grid connection processes
  • Experience with MV/LV systems and grid integration studies
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act
  • Familiarity with environmental legislation and permitting requirements
  • Strong understanding of SANS, NRS, IEC standards, and ISO 9001
  • Experience with power system analysis tools (e.g., DigSilent, ETAP) is advantageous.
  • Knowledge and experience with the South African Grid Code.
