GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Applicants must be on an active competitive list or qualify as provisional in that title.

Performs cleaning and semi skilled maintenance tasks in a school building or assigned section; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, work includes semi skilled repair and maintenance tasks in addition to routine cleaning activities, and may include supervision of Cleaners. This position does not perform skilled maintenance tasks nor supervise skilled maintenance personnel.

TYPICAL DUTIES
  • Clean and make minor repairs to heating system.
  • Repair furniture, replace locks, and make minor plumbing and electrical repairs.
  • Paint rooms and equipment.
  • Sweep, mop, wash walls, dust, and perform other cleaning duties.
  • Supervise operation of school building during school events.
  • Replace light bulbs, towels, soap, and other supplies.
  • Empty wastebaskets and dispose of rubbish.
  • May cut grass, trim shrubbery, rake leaves,.
  • May operate a heating system - low pressure steam boiler, hot air furnaces, or hot water boilers.
  • May direct traffic for protection of school children.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Considerable knowledge of building and cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment; and ability to use them economically and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a heating system.
  • Ability to make semi skilled plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Sufficient physical strength to perform strenuous custodial activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • One year of satisfactory experience in building cleaning and maintenance work; or
  • Six months of satisfactory experience as a carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter, mechanic, steam firer, or other related maintenance work; or
  • One year of satisfactory experience as a Cleaner in a Nassau County school district.
