Job Description
Position Overview: The successful candidate will be appointed permanently in the Department as Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer and will serve as the rotational Head of Department for a 5 year period, after which they will revert to the permanent role.
Responsibilities- The person should be eligible to be appointed as the rotating Head of Department and manage the department effectively and efficiently in line with the CPUT policies and procedures specifically but not limited to academic project management.
- Research management.
- HR and staff management.
- Financial management.
- Student management.
- Teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, producing graduates capable of advancing to higher qualifications in Industrial & Systems Engineering.
- Active in research and supervise undergraduate final year research projects and postgraduate students.
- Develop and lead research in the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering.
- Recruit and supervise postgraduate students.
- Strengthen collaborations and secure successful external research funding.
- Contribute to faculty goals in teaching & learning, research & innovation, community engagement and work integrated learning.
- Incorporate research outcomes into the academic project.
Head of Department:
- Doctoral qualification in Industrial/Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, Technology Management or related discipline. All base qualifications must be in Industrial/Systems Engineering.
- Minimum 5 years in an industrial environment or 5 years of higher education lecturing and research experience (at least 3 years as Senior Lecturer).
- Management experience with curriculum development, quality assurance, professional body accreditation processes, financial and HR management of a department.
- Track record in postgraduate supervision with successful postgraduate students.
- Track record in research output in accredited journals.
- Registered with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
Associate Professor:
- Doctoral qualification in Industrial/Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, Technology Management or similar discipline; all base qualifications must be in Industrial/Systems Engineering.
- Minimum 5 years relevant Industrial & Systems Engineering experience in industry or 5 years of higher education lecturing and research experience.
- Successful supervision of Master's and Doctoral students.
- Track record of publications in peer reviewed/accredited journals.
- Registered with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
- At least four years lecturing experience or four years relevant industrial experience.
- Demonstrable ability to carry out research as evidenced by publications in accredited journals.
- Track record of successful postgraduate supervision.
- Evidence of appropriate academic and research leadership.
Head of Department:
- Academic leader of the department.
- Representative of the department to the rest of the university community.
- Representative of the university leadership to external bodies.
- Financial management and budget management; human resource management.
- Academic management and administration; quality promotion and quality management.
- Academic planning and development of the departmental PQM.
- Implementation of OHS Act.
- Professional development of academic and support staff.
- Implementation of the performance management system.
- Management of research and innovation activities.
- Management of workplace based learning and service learning.
- Management of stakeholder partnerships.
- Initiating and engaging in fundraising activities.
- Overseeing marketing and recruitment strategy of the department.
- Development of a departmental strategic plan and overseeing its implementation.
- Lecturing on all programmes within the department.
- Planning and executing all teaching and learning activities for Industrial & Systems Engineering.
- Promotion of community participation and linkages.
- Manage research supervision of undergraduate projects and postgraduate students.
- Assist staff with research funding internally and externally.
- Build research and innovation capacity.
- Teaching and learning, especially at postgraduate level.
- Recruit and supervise postgraduate students.
- Provide academic leadership in the department.
- Participate in curriculum development of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications.
- Participate in quality assurance and ECSA accreditation.
- Secure external national and international funding.
- Develop and maintain national and international industry linkages.
- Leadership and decision making skills.
- Coaching and mentoring skills.
- Language proficiency: English and any other official language.
- Computer literacy in MS Office with good organisation and time management skills.
- Knowledge of latest technology and developments in construction management, quantity surveying, or facility management.
