Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters
What is a Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters?
Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters are skilled tradespeople who work on the installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems in various settings. Plumbers primarily focus on water supply and drainage systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, ensuring that water flows properly and is disposed of safely. Pipefitters, on the other hand, specialize in the installation and maintenance of piping systems that carry gases, chemicals, and other substances, often working in manufacturing and energy sectors. Steamfitters deal specifically with the installation and maintenance of piping systems that carry steam and hot water, which are commonly used in heating systems and power generation. All three professions require technical knowledge and skills related to the analysis of blueprints, adherence to building codes, and the use of various tools and techniques to ensure the safe and efficient operation of plumbing and piping systems.
Tasks
- Shut off steam, water, or other gases or liquids from pipe sections, using valve keys or wrenches.
- Install underground storm, sanitary, or water piping systems, extending piping as needed to connect fixtures and plumbing.
- Assemble pipe sections, tubing, or fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing, or welding equipment.
- Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, or fixtures in structures, using measuring instruments such as rulers or levels.
- Cut, thread, or hammer pipes to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe threaders, or pipe benders.
